This article via Treehugger speaks to the issues in Canada, but they apply worldwide really.
Sprawl (urban or not) is destroying land tracks of nature filled with trees, birds and other
animals that depend on that natural habitat.
More cement, more asphalt, roads, buildings...............ugh.

The chart(s) on the page shows more of the costs to sprawl than people usually think about.
