The opposition to nuclear power in Japan, after the Fukushima event in 2011, has caused
them to rethink nuclear power.

So they are embracing wind and solar instead; to replace the 54 nuclear plants there.

They will be building a 1 GW wind farm that will have 140 wind turbines to be completed
by 2020. They are also installing the world's largest solar farm.
Their plans are to be energy independent by 2040.

*And FYI-for those that may not know-
GW-
Unit of electric power equal to one billion watts, 1000 megawatts, or 1.34 million
horsepower; enough to supply a medium sized city.

Also related-

"We already saw that new installed wind power in the United States added up to 6,519 megawatts in the first 11 months of the year, more than new natural gas capacity and twice more than coal. That in itself was impressive, and we expected a bumper crop in December... But nothing quite this massive.

December 2012 was by far the biggest month ever for new wind power installation in the US with 5.5 gigawatts of new capacity! This brings the year to 13.2 gigawatts, another record!"

Good news on both fronts.  6% of our supply is not insubstantial.
