]Farmers are lured into buying GMO seeds that are significantly more expensive than traditional seeds and are basically promised miracle crops that will make them rich. They're told they won't need pesticides. They take out loans from moneylenders (we don't have anything like the rural moneylenders in India, not even our banks and pawnshops are that rapacious). Pests and drought have destroyed the crops, leaving farmers in debt so deep there's literally no way out. So, by the thousands, they drink insecticide to commit suicide, dying a painful death, leaving grieving families behind who are still saddled with debt and children who are now doomed to a life of near slavery and grinding poverty.
]Because of Monsanto and its lies.
And, by the way, if anyone wants a gentle but heartbreaking introduction to rural life and poverty in India, read "Nectar in a Sieve" by Kamala Markandaya. It was written in the 50s but very little has changed in some areas of India.
