What do you think of repurposing materials for art projects?  Is this a good way to reuse things we no longer need?

I came across this page tonight showing ten different pieces of recycled art.  They were part of the Recycled Arts and Resource Expo in Bellingham, Washington.  The artists have reused everything from appliance parts to egg cartons to packing foam.

Yes I think it is a good way to reuse things than just throw them.
I had seen a lot of recycled arts here locally and some are really useful. Just us for old sewing machines that are converted into a table or center piece. And some other work of art for home decors and some are featured on exhibits.

I like the idea of taking something old and shaping it into something new.  When you tear something apart, you see the pieces separately.  It is interesting that people find inspiration in this separate parts.

There is a recycling company in San Francisco called Recology.  There was a story on the news on how they invite artists to pick through their scraps and design art pieces from it.  They call it the "Recology SF Artists in Residence Program".

They provide the artists with all the discarded materials they can use and the artists turn it into something.  They get a stipend and studio space as well.

It is interesting for a recycling company to get this involved with individuals.  I guess it shows that they are involved in  the community.

It is an interesting way to recycle! I think it would also raise awareness and encourage people to look at creative ways to recycle items in their own homes. This goes beyond recycling just newspapers and aluminum cans. It takes recycling to a whole new level. I really like how Recology works and it would be nice to see their program copied in other cities.

I like the thought of repurposing things into art, I have some packing form that I want to paint as art and put on my walls.  I just need to figure out how to make hard so it will not break up.

I like my art to look like something, rather than being an abstract concept, so I thought most of these were excellent. I particularly liked the 'ticking time bomb' - what a way to get the message of healthy living across! I thought the bird's nest and the princess were pretty cool, as well.

Once again, I wish I was more artistic. I can paint pictures with words, but that's my limit. Hang on, though - seeing as I'm using words which already exist, and using them in different contexts, perhaps I'm a reclycing artist as well!

My daughter's school had a project one year around recyclables.  All the students had to make a zoo animal out of recyclables.  It was a fun project really! We made a giraffe and I wish I had taken a picture of it.  We used toilet paper tubes, paper towel tubes, and a bunch of other little things.  We even used grass on the end of it's tail.

I think repurposing things for art is an awesome idea.  Especially if hte art can be displayed and used to replace art you might buy that was not made from recycled materials.

This art made of toilet paper tubes by Anastassia Elias is astonishing. I don't know how she had the patience to sit there with tiny nail scissors and make these tiny scenes inside a toilet paper tube. There's 36 pictures so you have to scroll down.

Those were quite impressive!! I couldn't imagine doing this myself, but that is cool that she did.  What was amazing is that I could tell what every scene was, even tho the figures would be quite small!

The recycled metal Rhino and driftwood horse on this link are fabulous.
The soda can dragon is stunning.
Artists think differently than most folks.

It's one of the best things you can do with recyclable goods. I saw pics of bottle ceiling on another thread, which was phenominal. Imagine some of these works, the more solid ones, surviving a hundred years from now in a museum somewhere.

It's a great way to reuse things whether we no longer need them or just want to give something new life or a new role. I saw a cute image on Pinterest in the past week or so where someone had turn a set of stove burner covers and some lids into an owl. It was adorable. I've seen some neat outsider-ish art made from bottle caps and other metal scraps.

If you Google Fleur Debris you'll see some examples of upcycled art. I've seen the artist at one of our local art markets. I'm not crazy about the debris fleur de lis, but I think the little houses are cute.
