Solar Power Reduce's Pesticide Use In India

Views: 1601
Consisting of a tray on which a paste of castor oil and shampoo mix is smeared;
. . . . . . two 5 watt bulbs,
. . . . . . small solar panel, and
. . . . . . battery,
the device attracts fruit borer and whitefly then traps them in the sticky mix.

The results have been quite dramatic!
. . . Where participating farmers were once spraying weekly;
. . . . . . spraying now occurs once a month.
Aside from the substantial savings in Money spent on pesticide;
. . . fewer toxic chemicals are entering the ecosystem.

For apple orchards and rice crops, a similar device:
.. . a solar panel charges a battery during the day,
. . . that powers the light bulbs,
. . . which automatically switch on at night.
The special bulbs generate a wavelength of light that attracts insects.
. . . When the insects come with 15 - 30 centimeters of the light,
.. . an additional frequency wave disorients the creatures,
. . . causing the insects to drop into the water containers and drown.
. . . The resulting insect "soup" could then be applied as a fertiliser.
