Evaluating the future energy resources,
. . . that will shape electricity production in the U.S. in the near future:
1) the pace of retirements and new investment undertaken;
2) market conditions, specifically the price of each resource going forward; and
3) the support each resource may get through various policy initiatives.
It is especially telling that even though coal prices in 2016 fell below 2015 levels,
. . . coal-fired generation declined.
. . . This has been due not only to low natural gas prices ,and
. . . heavy coal power retirement,
but also to the fact that investors are wary about coal’s future.
