Email Receipts For Paperless Shopping

My daughter came home from her job at Banana Republic last night and mentioned that she had issued a couple of email receipts that day.

"What's that?" I asked.

"You don't know what email receipts are?" she replied, with a big grin and lifted eyebrows.

Ha Ha.

After just a little basic research, I'm a fan of the concept. Instead of printing out a paper receipt, a store will email your receipt to you. Keep your receipts in a separate folder in your email program if you ever need them for return or tax purposes and only print them out if you need them. It's simple and elegant.

Of course, this is mostly only viable for big chain retailers with sophisticated, computerized POS systems. A "New York Times article" lists retailers who are utilizing the system, including Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Nordstrom, Anthropologie, Patagonia, Sears, Kmart and Whole Foods Market.

The Times article points out that "an estimated 9.6 million trees are cut each year for receipts in the United States, according to allEtronic, a digital receipt company." While many stores do not offer the option, and many customers do not take advantage of it even when it is offered, it's a start.
