When negotiations started in 2007,
. . . between the government and the coal mining union,
. . . 33,000 people were employed in black coal mining.

This number has been reduced to
. . . 3,500 without lay-offs, due to generous government programs of
. . . early retirement and retraining,
. . . benefits the remaining miners can also expect.

But the day also marked a stop to over
. . . 60 billion euros in coal subsidies.
