Robben Island,
. . . just off the coast of Cape Town in South Africa, where
. . . Nelson Mandela, spent 18 years in a maximum security prison,
. . . was powered by a diesel generator set, that consumed nearly,
. . . 600,000 litres a year.

ABB, installed a
. . . Microgrid consisting of:
. . . . . . Solar farm,
. . . . . . Storage battery, and
. . . . . . Electronic controllers, with a capacity of
. . . 666.4 kW, and the lithium-ion battery can store up to
. . . 837 kWh of electricity, which can be used at
. . . night or on cloudy days.

The smart microgrid controller, ensures that the
. . . diesel generator switches on automatically, if either the
. . . battery has run out of charge, or the
. . . sun is low, thus, ensuring that there is
. . . no black-out on the island.

Diesel fuel use, has gone from,
. . . 600,000 litres a year, to
. . . 250,000 litres a year, and
This Solar plant will run for more than
. . . 20 years and will pay back the investment in
. . . 5 years.

9 months of the year,
. . . the island can be powered by solar and battery only,
. . . without any need for the diesel generator.
