1,800 tons of lethal radioactive waste,
. . . stored on the edge of the Pacific, and
. . . within sight of the busy 5 Freeway, from the
. . . California, San Onofre nuclear power plant,
. . . has nowhere to go.

Follow the Money,
. . . That has saddled utilities with
. . . multibillion-dollar costs,
. . . to store the waste onsite.

This is a problem that should be addressed.  Addressed at the national level.  Should be a non-partisan issue.  A difficult issue though.

The nuclear power owners have been paying into a fund that was supposed to help deal with spent fuel.  A tiny bit of my gas and electric bill has gone into that fund.

Quoting from the above linked article: “The money was collected for one purpose and used for another,” said Dale Klein, a former NRC chairman who is now associate vice chancellor for research at the University of Texas. “There is a moral obligation to address the issue. It will be a challenge to get Congress to pay for it.”

Moral obligation?  Congress?

When they build a nuclear plant,
. . . wouldn't be a good idea,
. . . to factor in the cost of getting rid of the nuclear waste,
. . . into the up front building cost.

But, if they did that,
. . . maybe, no one would ever want build one.
