Just got the not-so-happy (but expected) news from Puget Sound Energy.

Highest December bill I have had in the new home of nearly five years. As expected, it has been colder than usual. Cooler by 1.5 degrees over last November (reflecting December's bill).

All figures are based on 31 days billing cycle.  Here we go for the 2,981 sq. fot 1.5 story home, Built Green 3 certified, heat pump, electric hot water, gas for cooking and gas furnace backup.

2007....1810 KWH...21.6 therms gas......677 HDD.....43.5 avg. daily temp.

2008....1515 KWH....3.2 therms gas.......550 HDD......46.7 avg. daily temp.

2009....1760 KWH.....4.3 therms gas.....613 HDD.....44.5 avg. daily temp

2010....1790 KWH....9.25 therms  gas....684 HDD...42.1 avg. daily temp.

2011....1992 KWH....5.27 therms gas....730 HDD....40.5 avg. daily temp.

Like I said no suprise. When temp drops, heating bills go up, just as when Texas and Florida get those nasty high summer temps, useage also increases. My neighbors paid on average $85 more than I did this billing period according to PSE figures. Many of them keep their home in the 64-66 degree range, too. My thermostat settings are ... WAKE: 69; LEAVE:67; RETURN: 70; SLEEP: 67.

Well, Merry Christmas to all an stay warm this winter!

My rate is actually 10.02 cents per KWH. In 2010 it was 9.8 cents a KWH.

Ho Ho HO

And... just got a new electric meter. I can now use the  Blue LIne (Black and Decker is the same thing) energey consumption unit. Monitors daily and current useage, can spot monitor given appliances, temperature, estimated monthly billing, etc.  Wouldn't work with the radio frequency controlled unit I had before. My daughter got it for me.  Time to have a little fun...

I live in India in a relatively hotter climate. I checked my electricity bill for the last few months & noticed that I consume on an average 7-10 KWh daily. I don't know this is higher and who should I benchmark this with. But for four people at home, this must be high. The biggest consumption is for the electric geysers: three of them, one per room. Heating load, I have always realized consumes more energy. There's TV which also is put on long hours but that's mostly in the morning & evening only with three of us out of the house mostly during the day.

Two or three years ago, our average electric consumption is at 250 Kw per month. That would be at around 8-9 Kw per day. But since 2011, we've trying very hard to reduce the consumption. And now the average is only around 5-6Kw per day. Using the electricity when it is only needed is the best way to reduce it. Had to put a hole on the roof on our kitchen and replace the metal sheet with plastic one. It adds to the lighting's during the day and save the use of light bulbs.

Got my numbers this morning from Puget Sound Energy. My overall bill is over $80 LESS this month than the average of my neighbors. I live in a 64-home subdivision of custom homes. Sizes range between 1860 sq. ftt and 3,800 sq. ft. Mine is 2,981, 1.5 stories, well insulated, all electric with a heat pump. Natural gas for heat pump backup and cooking. Electric hot water. Well insulated and Built Green Level 3 certified rating and just barely under Level 4.

While it was cold here, it never got under 20 degrees which would have kicked off the heat pump and turned on the furnace. Gas useage is for cooking (my wife did lots of baking and meal preps for various events) and and the gas fireplaces to take the morning chill off the room when temps were in the mid 20s.

Here are the numbers adjusted for a 32 day billing cycle. Cycles ranges between 29 days and 32. This months was 32 so everything is adjusted to 32 to get apples-to-apples.

Jan.  2008... 2608 KWH....25.84 therms.......39.3 avg. daily temp.....804 HDD

Jan. 2009.....2480 KWH....22.97 therms .....36.5 avg. daily temp......923 HDD

Jan. 2010....2920 KWH.....34.12 therms.....33.1 avg. daily temp......964 HDD

Jan. 2011....2412 KWH.....12.85 therms.....40.4 avg. daily temp......758 HDD

Jan. 2012....2442 KWH.....11.1 therms.......38.85 avg. daily temp.....865 HDD

The 2010 KWH useage also reflects use of a humidifier. Had enough cold days below 20 degrees the HP didn't run and the furnace did. The colder temps also dropped the overall humidity. Wood floors don't like humidity under 30%. Only time I've used it so far. That jacked the therms useage up a bit.

Overall, consumption is still down over the base year before HP tweaks and a KVAR unit was installed.

Happy New Year to all and hope to see some other folks post results.

Couldn't edit further on previous post so... my projections for the final two months will be that I will come in just a smidge under or over the 17,000 KWH annual usage. It will be slightly higher than the last three years but definitely lower than the base year. Gas usage will be around the low to mid 40s unless we have a total deep freeze the next two months. That annual total is lower than my neighbors use in a month. That will be approximately a 75% reduction in gas usage while still  lowering KWH consumption.

With our cold snaps here in south Florida the indoors thermostat says it got to 59* inside (We turn the heat off at night and use electric blankets). I've found 63* to be the low comfort range. This spiked our electric use for heat. We had one 55Kwh day but averaged in the 30's for the cold snap. Thank God it's 78* today!

Wishing for a nice decorative rocket mass stove for the living room that would pull us above our heating 'gap'. Something in carved marble with inlays.

Sadly, mine has gone up, even though I'm diligent about shutting things off or unplugging them.
Two factors, I believe added to this.
1- I'm only working a few hours a day, and being home more, I have the fans on to help distribute the heat
from a single wall heater.
2- I'm running two air cleaners.
With everything shut up against the cold, it helps keep the air cleaner/fresher.
Disappointing numbers though.
11/28-12/29/11
266 kwh-31 days

10/26-11/28/11
185 kwh-33 days

9/27-10/26/11
73 kwh-29 days.
I have to get back to the 73 kwh a month!  <_<

Well... it came today.  This year was a 29 day cycle. Have had a few of those, a few 30 day cycles and one 32 day cycle.  I have averaged the last five February bills to reflect 30 day cycles.  This past month we had a cold snap due to ice storms. Shut down power for two- three days. Forced to use the gas fireplaces to heat the house. Extremely inefficient and used  much more gas than I wanted. Anyway, here are the results...

2008.....2169 KWH.....32.86 therms gas....36.9 avg. temp.....885 HDD

2009......2115 KWH.......7.65 therms gas......38.5 avg. temp......827 HDD

2010.....1724 KWH.......3.046 therms gas....44.1 avg. temp......650 HDD

2011......1904 KWH......6.53 therms gas......40.7 avg. temp.....764 HDD

2012......2000 KWH.....19.69 therms gas.....37.3 avg. temp.....814 HDD

Running thopse extra 11 therms of gas translates into 322 KWH (1 therm = 29.3 KWH). Just before and after the outages I was averaging 83 KWH per day. So while the KWH would have been 160 higher my gas would have been much lower. Electricity costs less here to run than gas, even in a 90% efficient furnace.

One good item... according to PSE, my bill is $98 lower than the average bill in my neighborhood. I lke that.

What were you doing differently in 2010? It's the lowest kwh numbers you had.

Highest average temperature is what did it. Less heat loss. Big difference between 37 degrees and 44 degrees. Probably didn't have many 20 degree nights. I could check the records but that is my guess on the low temps.  The HDD numbers were also almost 200 lower than this year, too. Unfortunately, my wife and I generally pretty routine in what we do and how we do it...well most things anyway :)

Got the bill today. Puget Sound Energy got an additional one cent a KWH increase. That will push my average bill up $12-$20 a month depending on the season of the year.  Going to be 11 cents a KWH.  Was 6.5 cents five years ago.

Here's the dirty little numbers AND... the five year usage Five year anniversary was the 1st of the month. All numbers reflect 30 day cycle

MARCH 2008.....1968 KWH........19.53 therms gas.....42.5 avg. temp.....683 HDD

MARCH 2009.....1974 KWH.......6.0 therms gas..........38.5 avg. temp.....741 HDD

MARCH 2010.....1713 KWH.......2.17 therms gas........43.4 avg. temp.....600 HDD

MARCH 2011.....2095 KWH......9.88 therms gas.........38.0 avg. temp.....772 HDD

MARCH 2012.....1819 KWH......2.06 therms gas.........40.9 avg. temp.....691 HDD

We had the fridge replaced free of charge in late January. Broken internal wire and the ice maker/compressor was running all the time. Under warranty and they replaced the entire unit for a $50 deductible. Five year newer model of the same unit only with the flaws fixed. Wife is a happy camper. Unit uses about 75 KWH less per month now. Appears this has been an issue since about year three but was difficult to detect.

ANNUAL USEAGE FIVE YEARS (April billing to March billing)

2007-2008......18,028 KWH.....184.76 therms gas.....5511 HDD.......84 CDD....$1,923.73 energy costs

2008-2009......16,976 KWH.....72.98 therms gas.......5838 HDD......115 CDD...$1,749.40 energy costs

2009-2010......16,684 KWH.....66.0 therms gas.........5326 HDD.......78 CDD.....$1,760.29 energy costs

2010-2011......16.658 KWH.....55.9 therms gas.........5607 HDD.......100 CDD...$1,825.60 energy costs

2011-2012.......17,545 KWH....53.89 therms gas......5801 HDD........64 CDD......$1,927.08 energy costs

Well, the bill continues to rise but I still paid only about  $4 more than my initial year and my overall consumption has dropped.  Take than 900 KWH extra my old fridge was using and I'd been at the low point or very close to it.  Second highest heating degree day usage since we've been in the place.

OK, somebody else's turn.
