Windstream Hybrid.JPG

From E3Wise- No matter if it’s the NREL, Sandia Labs or the United States Department of Energy one thing has been stressed over and over again, hybrid solar and wind systems are more efficient and  over the long term cost effective than using just one source of renewable energy.  The reason is really simple usually if the sun is not shining, the wind is blowing and vise versa.  By covering both areas the variability factor is reduced.  The economic down size is the cost of a separate wind and solar facilities.  So finding a manufacture who can reduce costs by integrating a hybrid system is important.

Now here is the really hard part. Design a system that can be used in cities on multistoried buildings. Well no body said it was easy. Well WindStream Technology has done just that..

Windstream Technologies produces wind and sun generation equipment aimed at municipalities, commercial buildings and homeowners.  The installation incorporates 50 of WindStream's SolarMill devices. The different SolarMill models each comprise one or more solar panels and three or more turbines.

The installation is said to generate over 106,000 kWh of renewable energy annually, (25 kW of wind and 55 kW of solar) with a return on investment (ROI) of less than four years. Over the course of the projected 25-year life span, the energy cost savings are expected to exceed $2 million. WindStream competed for and was awarded the project for its ability to maximize energy production and ROI within the confines of limited roof space.

While BlueGreen SolarWind is an interesting concept, unfortunately that's all it is up to now, a concept.
This week I contacted the company to get information on any actual installations, unfortunately none have been installed yet and they were unable to give any time frame for installations coming online.

WindStream Technologies has several installations in Norway, Sweden, Riyadh, and several installations at schools here in the United States.  The wind gradient loads needed are actually pretty low meaning good power production in variable low speed wind conditions.  The solar technology while not very futuristic, are tried and true solar components that can be easily manufactured, installed and if needed
Repaired.

What is cutting edge are the braking systems for the wind turbines, and the controllers and MPPT technology being used, these give the SolarMills a very dependable and robust design that will last many years.  As a designer the biggest plus we could find was the hurricane mounting and certifications, having a product that will meet those criteria is huge, considering that these units can be put in coastal installations, finding any renewables that meet the Dade County Hurricane codes is always a tough nut to crack.

We always design to this Dade County code because it is the toughest most comprehensive hurricane code and is used all over the country by city, county and state permitting departments.  What it means in the real world is that these installations are rated to 115 mph winds and storms.  Meaning they will survive to be there when you need them most.

I understand how Solar & Wind complement each other,
but the biggest complaints against wind power are:
. . . . . . Noise, and
. . . . . . Kills Birds.
Are there any complaints against these units.

Also, are there different TYPE's of MPPT's?
. . . one for charging batteries,
. . . one for interfacing with the Grid,
. . . one for heating water?
