Jeremy Rifkin contends that worldwide unemployment,
. . . would increase as information technology eliminated tens of millions of jobs:
. . . . . . manufacturing,
. . . . . . agricultural and
. . . . . . service sectors.
He predicts devastating impact of automation on:
. . . . . . blue-collar,
. . . . . . retail and
. . . . . . wholesale employees.

Rifkin predicted the growth of a 3rd sector,
. . . voluntary and community-based service organizations,
. . . . . . that would create new jobs with government support,
. . . . . . to rebuild decaying neighborhoods and provide social services.
To finance this enterprise,
. . . he advocated scaling down the military budget,
. . . enacting a value added tax on nonessential goods and services and
. . . redirecting federal and state funds to provide a "social wage"
. . . in lieu of welfare payments to 3rd-sector workers.

Future jobs? Imo, renewables; (installations but not manufacturing-robot's will do that) and health care.

There are probably 45 million Americans out of work in all sectors, including the ones who no longer collect unemployment.
"The number of low-income people on food stamps (officially called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP) has declined recently from the record levels reached during Obama’s tenure. The most recent figures from the Department of Agriculture put the number receiving benefits at 46.1 million as of March 2014. That’s down from the nearly 47.8 million who were getting benefits in December 2012 — a record. But the most recent number is still more than 14 percent of the entire U.S. population, and is an increase of 44 percent since the month Obama first took office."

The trend toward world wide abject poverty, means future jobs will be people just trying to get water and food, and a cool place to stay, along with defending themselves.  That 14% of the US population is 45 million.

And let's not forget, Retirees' student loans,
. . . Gov't garnish's Social Security checks.

Social Security can start at 62, means survival. It means food, shelter, medication,
. . . even if the unpaid student loan originally was small,
. . . the amount they owe now, is usually a lot larger,
. . . because of compounding interest rates.
