"A spirited press conference in Times Square today launched the People’s Climate March, the largest climate action in world history. Posted Image“The voice of youth is crucial in the People’s Climate March.” Photo credit: greenelent
Scheduled for Sept. 21 in New York City, the People’s Climate March will coincide with September’s UN Climate Summit, where world leaders including President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping will be in attendance in answer to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon summons to consult on climate change.
Key organizations, representing hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and millions nationwide, hosted the press conference today to explain the goals of the mobilization and to share expectations for the UN summit. Representatives from New York City Environmental Justice Alliance, Sierra Club, 350.org, UPROSE and a number of local unions were there, as well as faith leaders, speakers from superstorm Sandy-impacted communities and millennials."

Let us hope it accelerates the needed emissions reductions.

Do we really think that movements can change the minds of boehner and his forty thieves? Their big oil buddies
have a greased shoot set up just for them. It slides their oily money directly into their off shore bank accounts
so they not only make millions/billions from their masters, but they also don't pay any US taxes.
They're not about to kill the golden goose.

If anything, these soulless, gutless wonders that are in office (including the "supremes") are making these oily giants
even stronger by weakening the fda, epa and any other fed agency that's there
to help us keep it clean and liveable.
High fives to the likes of monsanto and exxon is their motto.
The American public?
Take a number.

Sorry; on the pessimistic, sarcastic, realistic side of things today.

The way I look at the event is as a last chance to start the ball rolling toward 90% emissions reduction in 8 years.
By then, the Arctic ice and methane release reports will be in more than now.  That will let us be more accurate on when the unstoppable positive feedback loop is formed, and if we can really stop the process through going green, or require the purposeful eruption of Yellowstone.   I could never go to that over-crowded monstropolis of NYC.
My sign would read "BLOW YELLOWSTONE!!"  (ASAP!)
I think the chances of humanity really lowering emissions enough in time is 1 to 10%.  The mathematically certain human population crash will occur too late to be of enough effect.
Even the due probable population crashers through economic failure;  Katla Volcano and a single year winter, LaPalma and a huge tsunami hitting the US East coast, and the monster Cascadia Rip with 300' tsunami and R9 long quake from Portland to Vancouver.
If they happen after the positive feedback loop is formed, accounting for momentum, they would not be enough to stop GTEE.
ONLY a super volcanic eruption would stop it and the extinction of most species.
I am not being anything but scientific.  Emotionally, I do not like what is in store, after the party is over, soon.  It is a deeply saddening thing.    Mine has been the last generation to see it from the beginning, and to the end, for many.

So we should sacrifice half (or more) of the population in the US just so the numbers come down?
GAFB
Half of the country would be covered in ash. Some scientists believe 2/3 of the US would be uninhabitable
and there wouldn't be any food from the western half of the states.
You want that?

What I want is superfluous.  What will happen is only one out of a thousand will live through the ten years of volcanic winter.  This, of course, will take care of emissions.  Also, the cooling would be 10*F which would take care of CAGW.  That is including the warmth that takes 15 years to get here---momentum.  So the Global Terminal Extinction Event would not happen.  No runaway Venus Effect.  Most species make it through, including, hopefully much wiser, people.
A nuclear war could create a winter, but with enough radiation to kill most life, and not long enough to stop the methane turnover.
A world financial meltdown from Katla, Cascadia, or LaPalma, could initiate a crash with 90% emissions reduction, if it happens before we pass the tipping point of Arctic tundra methane self release.  That is, if it already has not been passed or inevitable, from open ocean warming.

"Recent satellite observations have confirmed the accuracy of two independent computer simulations that show that the West Antarctic ice sheet has now entered a state of unstoppable collapse. The planet has entered a new era of irreversible consequences from climate change. The only question now is whether we will do enough to prevent similar developments elsewhere."

If the march makes it into mainstream media, then the people will get behind them.  If the mainstream media suppresses it, then only "we extremists" will be aware of what they are doing.

I have September 21st on my calendar now.

Now there is even more reason to stay a few more days in NYC;

Michael,
"Young people have the most to gain from solving the climate crisis -- and the sooner the better.
They didn't cause the issue, but they'll have to live with it for decades. And for far too long, they and their interests have been ignored by leaders who refuse to protect the planet.
On September 23, this is going to change when exceptional young people get a chance to put their questions to the world's decision-makers -- to speak for their generation at the U.N. Climate Summit in New York City.
Today, we begin searching for the people who will ask their leaders the tough questions about global warming. We're collecting videos of young people ages 13-21 posing tough Why? or Why not? questions about the climate crisis. We'll choose the best to attend the Summit and demand serious answers from the world's leaders."
From Al Gore

I got another email from 350.org that says the march is a hope for a new beginning to rapid decarbonization.  I think Bill McKibben is right.  It is probably our last hope to motivate the world to act in time.
That is a source of arguments, how much time?  Some would like to go right to the limit, and others think now is the time to rapidly reduce HGHG emissions from all sources.  I really wish this happened in the 1990s.

4 Reasons Water Advocates Should Join the People’s Climate March Sept. 21

"Gary Wockner | August 31, 2014 2:12 pm

Posted Image
Posted ImageI inhabit the river-activist wing of the climate movement, and if you’re a river activist like me, please come to the People’s Climate March in New York City on Sept. 21. The future of the rivers of America is directly tied to our ability to control climate change. Posted ImageFor several decades scientists have known and studied historic “megadroughts” in the Southwest U.S. and Colorado River basin, but not until last week did a scientific paper directly connect potential future megadroughts to climate change.
I run organizations that work to protect and restore the Colorado River of the Southwest U.S. and the Cache la Poudre River of Northern Colorado. Both are at extreme risk as global warming increases."

Let us hope and pray that this gets the alt energy zero emissions green movement going toward a 90% or more world reduction in all HGHGs by 2024.

To draw attention to rural electrification, there is a new campaign at Indiegogo "Enlightening the future of rural communities" to bring electricity to productive use to a rural community in Peru. This project is the installation of a hybrid system (river turbine+solar panels).

At CFACT, Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, has on it's website as part of it's statement of purpose three phrases: Prospering Lives  Promoting Progress  Protecting the Earth, then more doubletalk/doublespeak/doublethink.  To me, the prospering of lives, the lives of those who control funding of CFACT and their ilk is actually a true aim of CFACT.  Might look at the DeSmogBlog entry for CFACT at http://www.desmogblo...uctive-tomorrow

The UN secretary will be there, the French foreign minister, Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Gore and many of
the survivors of super-storm Sandy and Hurricane Katrina will also be in attendance.
Over 2,000 marches are being held across the globe.

I understand Russia not being at the conference but what's up with
Canada and Australia?

The late Dr. Stephen Schneider said it well-
"We buy insurance for a less than one percent chance that our house will burn down.
And yet, we are waiting for 100 percent certainty on climate science even though the very life support system of our planet is at stake."

One of the many reasons they marched (from all age groups and all walks of life).

"Last week, meteorologists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
announced that this summer — the months of June, July and August —
was the hottest on record for the globe, and that 2014 was on track to break the record
for the hottest year, set in 2010."

And wonder of wonders; they actually said the words climate change on fixed news (on at a client's house-
I don't watch it).

I'm just surprised that the march is on mainstream news at all.  That's a win right there.

Now (for balance) they will show the 5 people with signs saying climate change is a vast left wing conspiracy and say that the world is evenly split.

New York city's Mayor; Bill de Blasio has made a pledge to reduce ghg emissions by 80% by 2050.
The measures will cost over $10 billion.
It was announced during the climate march.

http://www.environme...hgs-80-by-2050/

A great step forward, to be sure. But he (and other's in the area) should be focused on break water's and
sea walls to protect the island.
It's great to have energy efficient programs in place but if the whole area is underwater; what's the point?
