50,000 to 82,000 TONS of coal ash (along with about 27 million gallons) of water
were released from an
unlined holding pond from duke energy in North Carolina.

(In 2010, a coal ash slurry wiped out an entire town in Tennessee)

The EPA needs to get on the ball and quickly. "Under consideration" is no longer viable.

A handful of views on this coal ash spill is not getting enough attention.
So here's another article.

Are Americans that apathetic that we just don't care to be involved?
Keep our mouths shut?
Shrug our shoulders and move on?
What?
We MUST DEMAND these practices by the oil giants STOP.
Contact your representatives-tweet this thread-share on facebook; do something.

How long will be just sit idly by?

Donna Lisenby, Waterkeeper Alliance's global coal campaign coordinator said
"Duke has done nothing to contain the spill."

After visiting the spill location on 2/4/14 she said-
"There were no hard assets deployed on the river to clean up the ash,
contain the ash, or stop the spill."

Crews are working on plugging the leak; but haven't done so as of 2/5/14.

the number of coal ash accidents has been rising over the last five years, i think we should use this thread to start keeping a running commentary of coal and industrial water pollution accidents.

Agreed; but the thread will be 87 pages long by next Tuesday.

Governor Pat McGrory worked for Duke energy for 28 years and has been slow to criticize their operations
but is now saying that need to move the ash ponds away from waterways.
Duh.

The photo in this piece is horrendous.

"Current and former state regulators said the watchdog agency,
once among the most aggressive in the Southeast,
has been transformed under Gov. Pat McCrory into a weak sentry that plays down science,
has abandoned its regulatory role and suffers from politicized decision-making.

Duke has apologized for the spill and says it is now committed to cleaning up
some
of its 32 coal ash ponds across the state."

Some? What does that mean? Why not all?
And why is the republican party so against clean water and air?

Protecting the polluters-AGAIN.
But that's what happens when politicians are in bed with these a$$h*les.
I guess there motto is; "Like safe drinking water? Move."

Update-
these toxic coal ash spills were no accident.

According to duke energy, dumping of toxic waste into rivers and streams is-
"routine maintenance" :vava:

This is what happens when politicians are in bed with these giants; they get away with it.
Now, after the fact, they may have to pay some fines.
But the pollution remains, no matter how much "clean-up" occurs.

I don't understand why so many republicans hate the environment. Is making money all they think about? What good is
money if you're sick all the time?

"The House Energy and Commerce Committee's approval (32-19) last week of this 50-page tweak is a blatant attempt to--
let me introduce a new word to Rep. McKinley's vocabulary--
"gut" the first-ever federal standards for coal ash disposal."

To power the 'Centralized' U.S.A. electricity system, it takes about:
. . . 38 quadrillion British thermal units of fuel, (Pollution) out of that,
. . . 18 quadrillion Btus are converted into electricity, but only
. . . 12 quadrillion Btus actually reach customers.

To power the 'Distributed' U.S.A. electricity system, it takes about:
. . . 3 - 5 kW of Free (Non-Pollution)Renewable energy and Storage,
. . . use's zero water.

Coal ash spills, are one of the products of Coals 'Centralized' U.S.A. electricity system,
. . . that not only pollutes, but waste's energy, and water,
. . . unlike Distributed' U.S.A. electricity system.
(Which like the cellphone,
. . . also doesn't need poles & wires)

What do batteries have to do with Coal ash?

Elon Musk said, batteries were a crucial step in revolutionizing the world’s energy system, and
. . . phasing out fossil fuels.
Once we’re able to rely on renewable energy sources for our power consumption,
. . . the top 50% of the dirtiest power generation resources could retire early.
. . . We would have a cleaner, smaller, and more resilient energy grid.
