This article includes all public transportation venues, not just buses but the ridership has increased
to a 57 year high.
Public transportation trips have risen 37.2% since 1995 with 10.7 Billion trips (yes with a in 2013.
And they're not just taking public transit; they're (we're) driving less.
Less emissions=cleaner air, healthier lungs.

I'm surprised it's that much. I don't often visit London but when I do, it's by rail. Railway to central London then the Tube (underground) to get from place to place in the city.Going by car is simply not on if at all avoidable so public transport it is.
The Tube is fast, frequent, travels to places outside Greater London, and, of course, avoids traffic congestion.
So it surprises me that the number of passenger journeys so much fewer than the bus network. It does get very crowded and maybe a lot of people don't care for that. There's no air conditioning and in summer claustrophobia isn't the only discouraging factor......

The hoopla of San Francisco's Google buses-
but stats gathered from bike messengers puts it at-
"The MTA calculated that the shuttles save 757,223 car trips annually,
which amounts to about 6,750 fewer metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year,
the same as taking 1,400 cars off the road.
Using Stamen's numbers, that's 1.6 million car trips and 14,605 metric tons of CO2—or about 3,075 fewer cars."
