I'm a sailor,a surfer,SCUBA diver,pump engineer & generally passionate about water.
As a water-taxi driver I was waiting for a fare by the dock next to a railway line, when a train load of children appeared to go on a ferry to a camp: many of them chucked a rail-ballast rock in the harbour.
When I explained that this was soil erosion, siltation & shallowing the water so that their ferry was aground at low tide; I was given incomprehensible looks & told that I was the most boring person on Earth !
They had a point: so do I.
Yes it's fun to make a splash & the bigger the better but how can it happen without the environmental degredation?
Chuck an anchor or rock on a rope is one way,or a floater like a stick.
Yes I skipped flat stones, when a child,it's considered a skill to see how far & how many skips one can do.
It's a landlubber thing,now as a waterlover I see it differently,specially as a diver where I see the 'out-of -sight-out-of mind' aspect.
Can you educate for this without being 'spoil-sport' & dull boring?
It is important, one rock per person for years diminishes & accumulates ~ it's the ANT EFFECT !

I read a story about a study of youth on the environment.  It seemed they knew all the facts and figures but they were totally disconnected from the real world.

I forgot the specifics but what I thought the bottom line was would be exemplified by students saying they needed to use less gas, and meat consumption was bad for the environment, then they turned around and jumped in their cars and headed for the nearest burger joint.  It was like knowing basic math but not being able to make change behind the counter.

It would seem it's not just the environment, kids heads are being filled with facts, but with no relation to reality.  Somehow education in this country has really lost it's way.
