I have tried various litter for my kitty and she doesn't like half of them.  I tried natural, but we ended up having a mess with them.

I went to Petco to look around and found out that they have a system where you can purchase a filled jug of cat litter (your choice of 2 sizes) and then when you run out, you come back to Petco with the jug and refill it at their refilling station.  It is cheaper and also uses less jugs.  This is the first place I have seen this.  You can only get a clay based for the refill at this time (hoping they offer more of a variety soon), but it is a great way to save on litter and use less plastic!

Strip mining for clay litter is very destructive.
The little bit of plastic you're saving isn't worth it, imo.

I think better to train cats to use the comfort room.
Our cat do his thing in the CR in my room and so whenever I would smell something unpleasant in the morning, I know he had used it. It was not in toilet bowl but in the floor which is just fine for me since it has cemented floor and I can easily remove it going to the outside drainage with the use of broom and water.

Unfortunately it seems the only kind of litter that I can use with my kitty.  I have tried every natural cat litter I could find and she wouldn't keep it in the pan.  I found myself having to buy newspapers a few at a time a day to line the wall and floor   I thought it was arthritis as she does it with the other clay litters too, but with the one from Petco she has not got a drop out of the box.

I literally had to change the papers a few times a day before and it took at whole newspaper to cover the area enough.  This stuff doesn't clump quite as hard as normal clay litter, but it is working.

Wow, I should have read the article before I responded before.  As you can see I am having one of those kind of days so I read it after.

I am not even sure what to do now.  She was ruining the floor and the wall by her "avoid the litter box like the plague" adventures with all other litters.  And that was with all the extra lining and changing of lining.

The newspaper pellets don't take away the odor so that wasn't happening.  She would go once and it would stink.  The corn was a great litter I thought, but she rarely got it in the pan.  Anything with a strong smell is out of the question for her and anything that doesn't absorb the odor well is out of the question for her.  This has been a battle for a few years now and I finally found a solution to her ruining my walls and I find out how bad it is.

As much as we love them, they can be messy.
My solution?
I bought a very large container that is normally used for comforter or blanket storage under the bed.
Put her tray inside that and the mess is easy to clean up.
Just dump the litter back into her tray.

There are also covered boxes that help keep the litter inside the box. Like a little hut.

(And yes, it's way off topic-but I recently got a new kitty. She was half starved, probably abandoned by
her mother. I found her in the yard wandering around, crying.
She may be permanently blind in one eye from an infection, but with lots of love and treatment
from my vet, she's on the mend and purring like a ...............kitten.) Now to get the others on board without
ignoring her or being upset............

Btw-you mentioned she's ruining the walls. Is she spayed? Cat's will continue to spray urine
as a territory mark if they're not cut.

Yeah she was fixed at 6 months.  She doesn't go around the house, but she props her back paw on the edge of the litter pan and therefore most of her urine goes right up the wall out of the pan as she goes.  It is not like she is just going around the house.  The vet suggested arthritis a while back and she can't jump as well now so it is hard to get too deep of a container.  I noticed she is worse with many different litters then she was with this one from Petco.  She actually was keeping it in the pan with this one.  I was starting to think that she didn't like to have her paws in certain litter.  She will get in the pan, she just doesn't keep her butt down anymore and certain litter she actually won't keep all her paws in the pan.  I love my kitty tho and do what I can to accommodate her.

I am not done trying to find a healthy and environmentally safe litter tho, I didn't realize exactly how bad the clay was.

Wow, I had no idea that they had refill stations! That is awesome. Will have to check it out soon.

I love the petco refill station! Unfortunately, I live so far away from a petco that I rarely get to use the refill system. But whenever I drive into the city, I bring my container and fill up.

Anyone know any other pet stores doing this?
