I'm trying to find new ways to cut chemicals out of my life. One of the places I figure I can cut is in my beauty routine.

I want to try homemade shampoo, body wash, conditioner etc. Does anyone have any good recipes to try?

I have been wanting to do this, too. This website has some good ones to start with. http://www.ehow.com/...y-products.html. I have only tried the herbal tea shampoo so far. I really like it and the smell is simply wonderful.

I did find a book that I want to get. It is called: Organic Body Care Recipes: 175 Homeade Herbal Formulas for Glowing Skin & a Vibrant Self. Here the link to it if you are interested.

I'm using baking soda mixed into a gritty paste with water for shampoo. It works just fine, but it's no herbal tea shampoo! Haha. It smells pretty fine, but it feels really strange.

I guess I'll have to try these links. Thanks!

You can make a basic shampoo with castile soap and distilled water and then add any type of essential oil you would like to scent it up a bit. It doesn't lather like regular shampoo, but cleans the hair pretty good without leaving any residue behind. Here is a recipe:

I make an exfoliating face and body wash with Greek yogurt, honey and brown sugar. Just mix a couple of teaspoons each of honey and brown sugar into a single serving pot of Greek yogurt. Wet your skin under the shower, rub the wash all over your face, neck and body, and leave for a couple of minutes before washing off. It leaves the skin soft and glowing, and I never need to follow up with a body lotion. I use it about once every two weeks to get rid of dead skin cells and buff up my skin.

Baking soda is a wonderful and cheap alternative to toothpaste. If you happen to swallow any, there goes your heartburn!

Thanks everyone. I'm going to go shopping this weekend and report back if I can. I'm in need of a body wash, but I think the castille soap might work plus yummy grapefruit essential oil.

This may be a bit spammy but this site lists recipes. It does include some questionable items, so I would not add
those ingredients. But it's a start.

I like to use honey for my hair and skin. To prevent hair loss or baldness mix 1 tsp. of honey with 1 tsp. of olive oil and 2 tsp. of water to make a paste. Massage this mixture onto the areas needing it the most (for baldness it would go on those thinned or hairless spots). This is best done before bedtime and the mixture will be left on for the night. Wash your hair as usual in the morning and continue to treat your hair with this mixture regularly.
Another honey mixture for these same issues would be a paste consisting of heated olive oil, 1 tbsp. of honey and 1 tsp. of cinnamon. Apply this to your scalp and leave it on for 5 to 15 minutes before washing your hair.

A list of skin treatments (either ingested or applied topically, or added to a soothing bath) listed here.

Coconut oil, white or apple cider vinegar, baking soda, Aloe Vera (this treatment goes back centuries) and olive oil.

"There are so many alternative ways to make shampoo like pure aloe vera and even eggs.

Let me tell you about different ways how you can use an egg to wash your hair.

1) First way to create a homemade shampoo using an egg is simple: mix 2 or 3 eggs (depending on the length of your hair) in the bowl prior to applying it on your hair and wash your hair with it, as if it was your usual shampoo. Then, condition your hair with your conditioner to get rid of egg’s smell and to make your hair softer. You can also use a homemade rinsing substance instead of conditioner, if you decide to go “all natural”. To prepare great rinsing water: mix 2 table spoons of vinegar (or lemon juice) with 1 litter of water and 3 drops of aromatic oil that smells great, and rinse your hair after you washed it."
