I have heard a few people mention that there is danger of the Bee population becoming extinct, and that this would have a majorly negative effect on the environment. I have not heard a lot of specifics on this. Do any of you have more detailed information on this?

Thank you for posting the links to this information! I am going to do some research on this matter. It is alarming to me to think that bees may become extinct, as I know they play an important role in out ecostructure.

You're welcome.
But they will be gone in your lifetime (from your young picture) and they are crucial.
But monsanto, dow, basf and others rule the world regarding chemicals, so sadly, they don't stand a chance.

"Three new studies point an accusing finger at a culprit that many have suspected all along, a class of pesticides known as neonicotinoids.

In the U.S. alone, these pesticides, produced primarily by the German chemical giant Bayer and known as “neonics” for short, coat a massive 142 million acres of corn, wheat, soy and cotton seeds. They are also a common ingredient in home gardening products."

There are many threats to man kinds current society, but this is one of the most under appreciated by most people.  Like you I have read several articles that show the link between these types of pesticides and bees.  Bayer has countered that the exposure would have to be well above normal levels to cause bee die offs.  Luckily Europe has not accepted this answer and I would hope the EPA would follow their leed.

That said I also feel other practices like transporting bees by truck long distances, with exposure to fumes and many different chemicals could also be a factor. The fact that bees are dying in record numbers should scare us all, but I fear just like the impending water crisis, people may not pay attention until it is too late.

Honestly it is this type of die off that keeps me up at night, and one of the few situations in which I feel dooms day perponents might just be right.

Maybe it's the awareness.
Maybe it's the reporting.
Maybe back in the old days people just said "grandma's not right today" but I believe that chemicals in the environment are increasing the cases of Alzheimer's.
I also believe they are causing more cancers.

But when bees get a form of Alzheimer's from chemicals, it effects us all.
Everyday use of chemicals by all of us, whether we want to or not, are diminishing all eco-systems; including us.

A quote attributed to Albert Einstien:

“If the bee disappeared off the face of the earth, man would only have four years left to live.”

Excellent.
I have a bit of a fear of bees. I had a dreadful allergic reaction to their stings when I was a child. That has stayed with me.
But I know the vital part bees and other pollinators play so I've have tried to overcome that fear.

We now have bees nesting (is that the right word?) in our bird box.

And lots of bubble bees..

This one was on the big ivy plant that covers one wall of our garage.
