I didn't realize that Google was investing in wind power. They are funding a proposed transmission line on the East Coast that would transport 7,000 megawatts of power. The company that would construct the transmission line is Atlantic Wind Connection.
They still have many hurdles to jump over including state and federal regulations. But, they are closer to an environmental review and could start work in two years. They could be transmitting power by 2017.
I didn't realize until this article that the US does not have any offshore wind farms. So, then, these lines would be transporting from land based wind farms, right?
Do you think that by Google providing backing it will give a boost to wind power? Is the idea of putting transmission lines along the coast a good idea or a bad idea?

Wind power is all over the US, TX is the second largest installed base, I forget who's the first. Transmission line access has been a big stumbling block and NIMBY is killing off shore fields, they seem to be as vilified as drillig platforms. Cape Cod nixed a project, too many 1%ers didn't want their views interrupted I guess.
I think wind is now self sustaining and will continue to ramp up, Google can only help.

I think it's great that the project was cleared. We need access to green power and it's heartening to see companies like Google taking initiative in that direction. Now if only the Wall Street guys can follow suit..sigh
