There used to be these things in the 90s called green plugs. You would plug them into your wall outlets then plug heavy appliances in. I have has a few back then, but I wasn't so sure if they actually worked. Do they still sell anything like this and do they work as they state they do? How much money can I save on electricity with those things?

Not much on the web about it. Mentioned briefly on a blog-tightwad gazette. You can google for more info.
Power strips are the way to go. Plug e-gadgets in, and when you sleep or are away, just flip the switch.
It kills the vampires.
(Not for the frig.)

The only green plugs that I know of are for older refridgerators and they work by compensating for the poor performance of the motors in these fridges. More current fridges have a number of these efficiency-enhancing technologies built in especially if you get those that are intended to be the most efficient. Other than that, the power far is your friend. You can even get power bars that turn on a bunch of other devices when one main device is turned on. This can save you crawling under desks for some of these.
