I have to begin this by saying I have been a very blessed and lucky person to be a part of the alternative energy world.  There are not a lot of people who get to take their love of nature and people and put them together to bring understanding and change to our country and the world in the way that I have been privileged to do.  Add to this the fact that I get to spend every day working with my equally committed husband and well life has been an adventure to say the least.

With this said our lives of trying to facilitate change have been a rollercoaster of meteoric highs and crushing lows. Yet it the successes that keep me going and participating in so many important issues and causes like this web forum of Alt Energy Shift.

For this site my overall goal is to provide information to spur sharing and discussion, while maintaining a neutral position, focusing on partnerships and solutions rather than saying why things won’t work or focusing on what we are working on.  That is one reason why I post so many articles regarding new developments and facilities, because I am trying to show that a change is taking place and it is gaining speed, but we have still so far to go.

I will admit that a couple of times I have slipped and mentioned types of design projects we have been involved in, but I am trying to not make this mistake in the future.  The reason is that we just integrate technologies, we don’t produce those technologies ourselves and I think those companies and their accomplishments are the most important to stress to others, because without them we have nothing.

Yet lately the nay say’ers have begun to get to me so I am going to post this next story because I think it is important for people to understand the true possibilities of what is possible.
Our company Environmental Power & Water Generation (EPWG) is an integration design company. Our screen name E3Wise is actually an acronym; it stands for Economic Environmental Energy (E3) +Water IS Essintial (WISE) thus E3Wise, we have used this for all our Educational and Informational work.

We partner different technologies together to create synergies, basically creating symbiotic relationships to create multiple market streams based on the best fits of efficiency and cost effectiveness. Why create multiple market streams? Simply to pay for the technology and generate profitability as quickly as possible while creating new markets streams from the companies cleanly and environmentally responsibly.  This way alternative energy and water generation can truly integrate more quickly into the main stream because worldwide scientist tells us we really are running out of time if we are going to save our planet from ecologic disaster.

Quick example, EPWG completed a design project early in 2011 in Texas for a plastics extrusions plant. Yearly they were spending approximately $875,000 on electricity, $380,000 for natural gas and $295,000 for water.  All were slated for increases in 2011 & 2012.

We designed a LEEDs Silver plan that combined a Small Solar Farm using computer tracking with one – 2 MW GE Wind Turbine that incorporates a 5 day backup using- MW battery storage and hydrogen storage systems.  We specifically designed the system at a 30% over production ratio so that we could use an underground brackish aquifer to fulfill the water needs and then after use sell to the local water utility as potable water.  The customer was able to take advantage of multiple federal, state, county, and utility incentives that cut the initial cost by 53 %.

Here are the markets created. 1. Reverse metering, after the 5 day backup is meet all excess electricity is sold to the utility, currently about 19% of their total electrical production. 2. Water- using a combination of 1st step distillation, 2nd step electro-dialysis, 3rd step micro reverse osmosis & UV light configuration to produce 80% potable water and a 20% brine solution. 3. Brine which is sold to a company just over 40 miles away that uses tanker trucks and refines the brine to produce sea salt. 4. O2- Oxygen – the site incorporates a Hydrogenics - HySTAT Electrolysis Systems which produces both .9999% pure O2 and Hydrogen.  Both of which are captured.  The O2 is sold to a distributes of industrial, medical, and specialty gases such as hospitals and welding. 5. Hydrogen- after the five day backup is captured the excess hydrogen is also sold to distributors for use by manufactures. Likewise the hydrogen electric generation system is from Hydrogenics also.

By creating a Poly-Generative configuration we have added 5 products that provide savings and additional revenue on top of the product the site is already producing while turning energy and water costs from a part of manufacturing cost to revenue gained by investment in economic environmental energy and water sustainability- E3 Wise  Just to be clear there are several other sites doing basically the same thing this site is and all have been able to do so while paying off the technology in less than seven years.  One of the most successful is a Air Force base in Hawaii but I will save that for a later article.

Economically and socially this is how America can truly shift from a carbon based economy to an alternative energy economy. Oh by the way payoff for the site is 6 years at current utility prices; however with both the drought in Texas and the increasing costs of energy the outlook is that it will beat that rate. With this said, without the federal, state, and county incentives the payoff would have been twice its current rate. Projected life span of the technology is thirty years.

By incorporating complimentary off the shelf existing technologies our design models comes at this from an economic standpoint first because solutions must be cost effective immediately to gain widespread competitive advantage and compete with fossil fuels. Creating marketable products means that alternative energy can now fulfill the same ability oil does to produce other numerous marketable bi-products, our designs just do it cleanly with minimal environmental impact while maximizing water our planets most threatened natural resource.

The reason for our large multi disciplined focus is that we feel that each alt energy segment is going to Washington and lobbying congress separately, when what should be stressed is a holistic all inclusive focus placing the best solutions based on locations available resources because honestly there is no One Answer for Americas energy and water needs. The answers are multi dimensional.  That’s why we base our analysis on the location and what the best producer are on site.

I am writing all this because as an integrator, I want you to understand where I am coming from and what my motivation is.  For Alt Energy Shift I want to come at this from a knowledgeable perspective without appearing as a know it all, or purely business motivated profits driven individual.
In my heart of hearts I feel the message and awareness about the solutions available is most important aspect if we are to bring a culture wide shift to our country and the world.  Still sometimes when I see the solutions being ignored or hear people say that you cannot change the way America works I get a little depressed. Especially with the politicians in Washington who are tied at the hip with big fossil fuel producers.

Yes making changes can be hard but what is important to remember for all of us is that there really is strength in numbers and as we work together we build bridges of change to the future.
So this is my little rant because I am just tired of people telling me things like solar and wind can’t provide a permanent hard energy solution, or hydrogen has a low energy value, or America will never change.  Folks stop reading just Wikipedia or things put out by those trying to stall change and get real information of what is truly possible, because without all of you understanding the solutions then big fossil fuel will win and America will be left behind by others using the technology we as a country have invented.

Think of it like this for over 40 years NASA has used the technologies I just went over to power our space program from the Mercury program to the international space station today, it’s time to bring them down to earth for all of us here in America, not just the rich 1%.

Thanks for reading the posting and I hope this thread starts bringing about discussion on solutions and where we need to be going.

It does sounds as if you could get some serious satisfaction within your role integrating all these different technologies to achieve such impressive savings in the face of all those who would oppose change or deny its possibility. This is very direct work with an immediate benefit and some days I could really use that. My volunteer activity is in appropriate land use planning to ensure developers don't get away with all the slimy tricks they play. This does have its successes such as getting a win so that wildlife corridors are included in all future environmental assessments within the area. However, there are also the losses such as where an important wetland ends up being seriously damaged because judges don't understand that you can't drain half a swamp on fractured bed rock.

I did enjoy reading your post. Its always good to know that there are many others out there trying to advance the yardstick further.

Thanks for that. What I particularly appreciate about what you do is this part:

I tend to harp on that myself. We couch too many discussions in either/or terms (I mean the populace in general, not here at AltEnergyShift). And, solutions that work well in Texas are probably not going to be the best ones for Western Washington.

I know it must be frustrating and maddening and depressing at times to keep going, but just so you know, I'm a bit envious. My work is not directly related to environmental issues. I'm a writer and I spend most of my time writing about nutrition and health. It's important to educate people, and food actuallly is related to environmental issues, but I mostly feel like I'm not doing anything terribly important that thousands of other people aren't already doing as well. So keep fighting the good fight for those of us out here who wish we could but haven't yet found a way to fight the really big fights.

E3- Your posts tend to run long, but the information you share with our community is always welcome.
Your insider track to a lot of things we not know about yet through other media is greatly appreciated.
So forget the naysayers, and "keep on keeping on" -as they used to say.
