I was browsing the internet when I just happend to stumble across this site, Blackle. It is a search engine just like Google, and is powered by Google Search.
Now what caught my attention was that this site aims to save power, by minimizing the power consumed by your computer screen. To achieve that, they have kept the pages predominantly black, so that monitor brightness is minimum, and also because black requires the least amount of power to be displayed.
They claim to have saved 2,828,832.388 Watt hours. Have a look.

I just know screen saver and turning off computer when not in use in terms of saving electricity in using internet. We could also adjust brightness of our monitor directly but it will make it harder for us to look and see what is in our monitors.
But if it will just be somewhat black on searching some pages online and be able to save some amount of power, that makes the site worth trying and using.

I like the idea, the site looks decent and in fact I prefer a darker background/theme when browsing the internet especially at night because it reduces the glare. I can compare it right now, when I switch to a dark page my eyes don't strain that much, compared to ones with brighter themes.

I don't know what it is about my eyes and brain, but I just cannot read a site with white letters on a black background. It gives me an almost instant headache and literally makes my eyes hurt. I just tried the site and felt it right in the center of my forehead. Ouch. It's an admirable goal and I hope it works for other people. In the meantime, my screensaver comes on automatically often, and whenever I'm going to be away from my computer for more than 5 minutes I just turn the monitor off.
