Cheap, Tough, And Green

Ever heard the expression, “dirt cheap?”
. . . Of course you have, because dirt is cheap.
. . . It’s everywhere.
. . . No matter where you go, there it is.

As a building material, rammed earth is cheap, tough, and green.
. . . So why is not used more often in construction?

If you think nothing made of dirt can possibly be durable, consider this.
. . . Both the Great Wall of China, and
. . . the iconic Alhambra palace in Spain are made of rammed earth, and
. . . have been around for more than 1,000 years.

The first advantage of rammed earth is low cost.
. . . Dirt is available everywhere, and is usually inexpensive if not free.
. . . Since it is available locally,
. . . the cost of transporting building materials is eliminated.

Usually, only one trained worker is required.
. . . The majority of the form building,
. . . and mixing can be done by unskilled local workers.
Once again, that keeps costs low.
. . . The finished walls have a unique beauty of their own, and
. . . require no exterior or interior finishing.

The Strati, is the world's first 3D-printed car, a small 2-seater,
. . . International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago.

The Chevrolet Volt, has a range of 40 miles,
. . . but can achieve speeds to keep up with other vehicles on a high-speed freeway.
The Strati has 3 times the Volt's range,
. . . but can't go faster than 40 mph.
And, unlike the Volt, it still requires plenty of testing before it can hit the road.

But, 25,000 parts make up the average car,
. . . 64 parts make up the 3D-printed Strati.

Recycling Energy: "operating Reserves"

Grid "Operating Reserves," are essentially plant capacity used,
. . . to accommodate short-term fluctuations.
It's about extra power generated, that's constantly wasted and seldom ever used.

Just because, sometimes, a bit of power is quickly needed to stabilize grid frequency;
. . . . . . this power is needed within a second.
. . . At other times, power is needed within a minute.

New batteries, appear to be cheaper,
. . . provide more grid stability than conventional plants,
. . . react within a fraction of a second, and
. . . doesn't waste energy.

The system is a real-world example of the kind of battery storage,
. . . described in a recent study for 100% renewable power.

Aqualibrium:

Plastics To Oil.

Dancing smilie icon goes here_________.

"Only 7 percent of plastic waste in the United States is recycled each year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
A startup company in Niagara Falls says it can increase that amount and reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil at the same time.

It all starts with a machine known as the Plastic-Eating Monster.
Thousands of pounds of shredded milk jugs, water bottles and grocery bags tumble into a large tank, where they're melted together and vaporized.
This waste comes from landfills and dumps from all over the United States.
John Bordynuik, who heads his namesake company, JBI Inc.has
invented a process that converts plastic into oil by rearranging its hydrocarbon chains.
According to tests by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, JBI's patented technology is efficient, with close to 90 percent of plastics coming out as fuel. Bordynuik says that makes the case for this kind of recycling to go mainstream.
Each barrel of oil costs about $10 to produce.
Because there's no lack of waste-plastic supply, and no lack of demand for oil, Maxted says the technology has the potential to transform both industries."
