Coal is by far the most destructive of all the fossil fuels. Aging coal-fired U.S. power plants shutting down, d[left]emand for one of the dirtiest fossil fuels is expected to stagnate or diminish here in the U.S. When it's burned, coal releases a number of problem pollutants:. . . 1. sulfur compounds (cause acid rain),

. . . 4. carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas).
